My Netflix doesn't understand me. Will you be my surrogate Netflix?
I’m looking for good movie recommendations. I think the best way to get them is to list some movies that I found so engaging, after each ended, I was left wanting another movie much like it. If the majority of this list appeals to you, perhaps you and I are on the same wavelength. Perhaps you can recommend more.

I know you don’t know me, so don’t worry about whether your choices "fit" what you think I’m looking for. List movies that stuck with you. My tastes are rather eclectic, actually.

House of Sand and Fog
Gran Torrino
Things We Lost In The Fire
Bella
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Henry Poole Is Here
Sex, Lies, and Videotape
American Beauty
Spanglish
The Graduate
As Good As It Gets
I Am Sam
Magnolia
The Sixth Sense
Dancer In The Dark
Big Fish
Chasing Amy
My goodness, you Answerers are awesome. Each of you have included some movies that I have seen but forgot to put on my list. I like your tastes. I’m going to have months of viewing pleasure here. — The only problem I see is picking a best answer. When the time comes, it’s going to be a highly subjective, ALMOST random choice. If I don’t pick your answer, please don’t be insulted. Thank you for your input. You’re all great
I’ve got a great list going so far. Don’t let that stop you from giving me more movies. Help me glut my Netflix queue. // Here are some more movies to add to the list: Crash, A Clockwork Orange, Chocolat, Dirty Pretty Things, Fearless, The Photographer, Naked Lunch, Shopgirl, Waking Life, Life Aquatic.

Except for a couple that I don’t really know about (Henry Poole is Here and Bella), those are all excellent movies. Base on your film list, I would recommend these

Requiem For A Dream
Memento
The Commitments
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Being John Malkovich
Walking and Talking
My Life As A Dog
The Cider House Rules
Princess Mononoke (yes, its animated, but amazing)
Montana (w/Kyra Sedgwich and Stanley Tucci)
The Machinist
The Minus Man
Equilibrium
Pi
Cube
The Quiet Room

and check out the series
Dead Like Me

I like most of your list so hopefully you will like some of the movies I recommend (some will be foreign as I see you liked Dancer in the Dark which is in english but not an american film). Look these up on imdb.com and see if the plots interest you:

Dogville – This is an amazing film, it is a bit slow at first but worth it
Happiness
Storytelling
Paranoid Park
Another Day in Paradise
Man Bites Dog – French – A mock documentary following a serial killer, very funny (then suddenly it’s not)
Oldboy – South Korean – amazing
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance – South Korean – same director as Oldboy – amazing
Lady Vengeance – South Korean again same director as above but not as good as either, although most people disagree and say this film is the best in the series. It’s still better than 90% of all films ( I have seen) in my opinion.
Hard Candy
La Haine – French – incredible
City of Lost Children – French – very beautiful and unique film
Everybody’s Famous – Dutch – sweet film, I enjoyed it the same way I enjoyed American Beauty
Amelie – Same comment as above
Kung Fu Hustle – one of the funniest movies I have ever seen
American History X
Battle Royale – Japanese
Igby Goes Down
Party Monster
Mean Creek
Saved!
Unbreakable
Bully
Children of Men
No Country for Old Men
Little Children

Hmm…I know what you mean about Netflix. I love it, but I am never inclined to rent any of its recommendations. Here are a few I’ve rented over the past couple months and liked & a few favorites (I enjoyed quite a few of the ones you listed):

Lars and the Real Girl
A History of Violence

Away From Her
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Hoax
Adaptation
Be Kind Rewind
Before Night Falls
Vanilla Sky
Capote
The Assassination of Jesse James…
The Squid & The Whale
The Darjeeling Limited
Secretary
Garden State
The Science of Sleep
The Weatherman
Y Tu Mama Tambien

2 movies that have always stuck with me ever since I’ve seen them are:

"Mother" with Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds and "Something’s Gotta Give" with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. This is just my opinion. I like up-lifting, light and fun movies. Also the music in both films are really good too especially in "Mother".
